To continue from yesterdays entry, The Reason why I love Ubuntu so much is the community behind it.
I don’t know who’s idea the Ubuntu Code of Conduct (CoC) has been at the first place, but I’d like to thank him/her/it wholeheartedly. I’ve tried several distros in the past, starting from Red Hat to Debian to Knoppix to Mandriva to Fedora to Ubuntu. When encountering troubles and asking assistance from the communities (Finnish ones mostly), I’ve stumbled over some very hostile attitudes towards n00bs. Actually I’ve encountered the same attitude in real life too, but let’s not get into that.
Actually, my first steps in Penguin Land have always before ended because I got fed up with the atmosphere of “peer” help forums. Still, I’ve tried again and again, finally achieving such a level that I can’t be frowned upon anymore.
My first refuge against such attitude has been an IRC channel, where n00b bashing has always been discouraged. It’s not related to Ubuntu, by the way. I got my necessary amount of selfreliance from there, and I’ve been active member of that society for over two years now.
But Ubuntu really hit the jackpot. Not only is it a quite newbie friendly distro, the CoC and how it is applied almost *everywhere* does the rest. Surely there are distros that are more newbie friendly than Ubuntu (I’ve heard Xandros might be one of them), but the community is so friendly that I recommend Ubuntu for everyone. Even if Ubuntu might not be the easiest, the community and the atmosphere makes it so easy to ask a question if problems arise, that I wouldn’t even consider other distros anymore.
I love you guys.
